Building Inspection

The Building Inspection Department enforces all building codes, acts and regulations. The department inspects all phases of construction, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing , structural installations and acts as consultant to other town departments and agencies.

As of October 1st 2022, the state had adopted new building codes and amendments.

Building Permits

A permit is required for any person who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by state code, or to cause any such work to be done. The property owner is responsible for obtaining a building permit, but often a contractor will apply on behalf of the property owner. 

Before applying for a permit, you should review the flow chart for construction documents and it is recommended to contact each of the following departments individually : Engineering/Wetlands , Zoning , Planning , Economic Development for their departmental requirements 

Forms are available from the department's permits and forms page. Payment and any necessary documentation must accompany the application.

All work can be performed between the hours of 7:00 a.m and 10:00 p.m Monday through Saturday and the hours between 9:00 a.m and 10:00 p.m on Sunday.

The Building Department requires a sign off from all other departments. All life safety, FINAL INSPECTIONS and supporting documentation needs to be provided 30 days prior to issuing a C of O. Some, if not all might be required. Please discuss with the Building Department and or the appropriate department that requested additional information.

  • All rough and final inspections to be performed
  • Fire Marshal, Zoning, Planning, Health, Wetlands and Engineering sign offs
  • Public Act No.16-45 requires documentation of the individual or entity that supplied the concrete and the name or entity that installed the concrete. This is required prior to C/O issuance
  • Design professional letter of completion
  • Statement of professional opinion
  • Final special inspection reports
  • State elevator certificate
  • State Boiler inspector sign off
  • As-Built survey

A staff member is Historic District Coordinator and liaison to the Historic District Commission.

eNGINEERING division 

The Engineering Division provides engineering and surveying expertise in all matters relating to municipal engineering for the Town of Wethersfield. The Division is responsible for preparing and administering the capital budget; design and management of municipal construction projects; administration of annual sidewalk maintenance, pavement marking, crack sealing and road paving programs; reviewing proposed development plans for local boards and commissions and providing technical assistance to various committees; contractor licensing and permitting for improvements within the public right-of-way; administering the survey, mapping and technical requirements of a town-wide Geographic Information System; and in general, assuring that the interests of the Town residents are met in all engineering and surveying matters.

Permit fee

Building,Electrical,Plumbing and Heating permits: $30.26 for the first $1000 of estimated cost and $16.26 for each additional $1000 of estimated cost rounded up.
